Mywords School Network

Mywords School Network is a network for a broader integration of literary translations into teaching practice. The translation is not the final product, but it is primarily about the translation process. The aim of the method is to create a cross-border exchange that allows high school students to promote and practice the conscious use of native language and languages.

The establishment of the network aims to optimize the evaluation and self-evaluation grids that contain the indicators on which the Mywords method is based. These can be found following this document.

Our call is addressed to all European educational institutions that:

- consider literary translation as a bridge between cultures, which can enrich the teaching and do not limit learning to new languages and cultures only to the communicative and functional aspects that are expressed in linguistic means;

- want to build a transnational exchange with the means of literary translation, and therefore offer translation laboratories, but also consider the different forms of teaching and teaching methods of the countries and convey them to the partners. Of course, such a project can also be realized virtually. The translation laboratories take place with the following groups of students:

a. Pupils who learn the native language of exchange partners as a foreign language, with the aim to translate and publish short texts (as happened in the anthology "My words with your");

b. Pupils who use a third language as a transfer language to translate the contents of short literary texts into their mother tongue;

c. Immigrant students whose native language is different from those of the host country and who learn the language of the host country as a foreign language, and native speakers who work with them to translate stories from the culture of migrant cultures into the language of the host country.

The literary text becomes a means of communication and integration. Students learn that reading is not just about content but also about the reader's worldview.

The goals of the Mywords method are:

1. linguistic goals

in the foreign language:

- extension of lexical competence;

- better understanding of the source text;

- identification of the characteristics of a literary text;

in the native language:

- a more conscious and careful choice of words

- improved grammatical correctness

- Improvement of the style

- The ability to reformulate content will be encouraged

2. cultural goals:

- broadening the knowledge of authors of contemporary literature and their works;

- Gaining experience with another school system and other teaching methods by visiting the other country.

3. competence-oriented goals:

- the students learn to analyse a text carefully in order to translate it better;

- Students research information needed to better understand a text.

- Students get to know tools of professional translation, both digital and analogue.

4. social goals:

- Pupils use the acquired competences in order to achieve a common goal and a common product.

- Students have the ability to argue how their decisions have been made and to respect the decisions of others.
